{"id":553,"date":"2017-05-11T15:31:04","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T22:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rccostello.com\/wordpress\/?p=553"},"modified":"2026-05-08T03:38:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T10:38:31","slug":"practical-examples-holl-reactor-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rccostello.com\/wordpress\/process-intensification\/practical-examples-holl-reactor-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Examples of the HOLL-REACTOR&reg; &#8211; Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/rccostello.com\/spinning_tube.html\">Part 2 of the Holl-Reactor\u00ae<\/a><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-696\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rccostello.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Untitled.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-696 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rccostello.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"The Holl-Reactor\u00ae for Process Intensified Chemical Reactions\" width=\"498\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rccostello.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Untitled.png 498w, https:\/\/www.rccostello.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Untitled-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Holl-Reactor\u00ae<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In this second installment of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rccostello.com\/spinning_tube.html\">Holl-Reactor<\/a>\u00ae, we will discuss practical applications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liquid-Liquid Reactions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mixing two liquid reactants is very typical. \u00a0This is oftentimes done in a Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). \u00a0Depending upon the physical properties of the two liquids, reaction times can be anywhere from minutes to hours. \u00a0However, with the Holl-Reactor\u00ae, these reaction times can be reduced to seconds. \u00a0For example, \u00a0in the biodiesel manufacturing process an oil needs to be mixed with a methanol based catalyst, where the two fluids are immiscible. \u00a0This reaction typically takes place in two\u00a0CSTR&#8217;s in series, with a phase separator in between the reactors. The residence time required in the CSTR is 20 &#8211; 30 minutes. \u00a0A single Holl-Reactor\u00ae, with a residence time of 3 seconds or less, can provide the same results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gas-Liquid Reactions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gas-liquid reactions such as chlorinations or oxidations are very common in the chemical industry. \u00a0However, mixing gases and liquids can be problematic. \u00a0No matter how finely divided the gas phase is upon introduction to the reactor, over time the gas bubbles will begin coalescing, decreasing overall gas phase surface area and increasing the overall reaction time.<\/p>\n<p>With the Holl-Reactor\u00ae, the high shear creates very finely divided bubbles, creating an almost instantaneous reaction. \u00a0The very short residence time is not conducive to coagulation. \u00a0As a result, gas-liquid reactions can be handled very effectively in the Holl-Reactor\u00ae, minimizing overall equipment costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liquid-Liquid Reactions with Nano Particle Catalysis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Holl-Reactor\u00ae is ideal for nano particle catalysis when a an appropriate method of recycling the catalyst particles post reaction and back back to the front of the reactor.
