{"id":1405,"date":"2018-04-01T06:37:24","date_gmt":"2018-04-01T13:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rccostello.com\/wordpress\/?p=1405"},"modified":"2026-05-08T03:03:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T10:03:38","slug":"chemistry-slime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rccostello.com\/wordpress\/chemicals\/chemistry-slime\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chemistry of Slime"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>Originally, Slime&nbsp;was a toy product manufactured by&nbsp;Mattel, sold in a plastic trash can and introduced in February 1976.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>&nbsp;It consisted of a non-toxic&nbsp;viscous, squishy and oozy green or other color material made primarily from&nbsp;guar gum.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Today, children everywhere have discovered how to make their own slime by using Elmer&#8217;s glue.&nbsp; So what exactly is in Elmer&#8217;s glue?&nbsp; It is a plastic polymer of polyvinyl acetate (PVA).&nbsp;Glue, historically, is indeed made from collagen taken from animal parts, particularly horse hooves and bones. In fact, the word \u201ccollagen\u201d comes from the Greek&nbsp;<i>kolla<\/i>, glue. This practice has been going on for thousands and thousands of years; it\u2019s not the invention of some enterprising farmer named Elmer who had a few about-to-be-put-down horses on his hands, a knack for organic chemistry and a vat of boiling water. Elmer&#8217;s Glue introduced PVA glue in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>Below you&#8217;ll see the structure of PVA. Adding iron filings to the slime makes it magnetic.
